Common questions
- Which computers does it run on?
- Version 0.1.0 comes as packages for Macs with Apple silicon, macOS 11 or later; see the download page. On x86_64 Linux, build from source; see Building from source.
- Why does macOS stop it from opening?
- The app is signed with Kaptonia’s self-signed certificate and is outside Apple’s notarization, and files downloaded in a browser carry the quarantine flag. Check the SHA-256 first, then remove the quarantine flag in Terminal; see Getting started · Installation.
- Is there a token?
- The project itself has zero tokens. Anchoring costs the chain’s own gas.
- Who operates it?
- The registry contract runs by itself and the app runs on your machine; each user operates their own part.
- Do I need to sign up?
- Your identity is a set of keys generated on your machine, ready to use once generated.
- Where is the data kept?
- On your machine, encrypted. The chain holds entry IDs and the sending address.
- What does anchoring cost?
- The default network is Ethereum mainnet, which costs real ETH; how much depends on the fee at the time. A batch of entries travels in one transaction, and the more entries, the less each costs; before sending, the app shows the gas cap. To try it first, switch to the Sepolia testnet as the Wiki describes.
- Are my files uploaded?
- Files stay on your machine. Fingerprints are computed locally, and what goes to the chain is entry IDs (the SHA-256 of each entry).
- What if I change computers or lose my keys?
- The whole-machine backup and its password restore every identity, ledger and setting; the original files are yours to keep. With the 12 recovery words alone, you recover the keys and the data readable on chain, and the ledger itself comes back from a whole-machine backup. With both lost, the local data stays sealed for good.
- What if I forget the passcode?
- Press “Forgot passcode” on the passcode gate and reset it with the primary identity’s recovery words or key file, or restore from a whole-machine backup; see A forgotten passcode.
- What if I find a mistake after recording?
- Add a note that explains it, or delete the record. The original entry stays in the ledger as it is.
- What does the other side need in order to verify?
- This app or the
zikaroncommand line, both open source. Verification only reads, and uses public data and the files you hand over. - Can it prove that I am the original author?
- It proves that your key held the content by a certain moment at the latest. The more continuously the making of a work is recorded, the more convincing that proof. See What a record proves.
- May I use it commercially, modify it or republish it?
- Yes. Code and text are under the MIT licence; keep the licence text. The embedded fonts each follow their own licence.
- How does it relate to the law where I live?
- It is an optional tool that runs alongside local law. Observe the law where you live as usual.
- Whom do I ask when something goes wrong?
- Open an issue on GitHub, or visit the discussions. Report security vulnerabilities through the repository’s private channel; see Developer guide · Security.

- What does this site record?
- Two display preferences, kept in your browser: which product groups are folded in the sidebar, and which product is selected. They stay on this machine. The pages make two kinds of request: the site’s own static files, and fonts from Google Fonts.
